Terracotta Army - most disappointing place so far

Getting really excited this morning. Going to see the Terracotta Army, so we left the hotel at 8 to avoid being caught in traffic. It's about an hours drive to the site and all the way was high rises or construction sites. Endless concrete city.

As usual with the big attractions in China it is all "Disney" so we parked in front of the visitors centre, walked a bit, waited for our guide, had some really bad introduction to the site in general (Chinglish) and then we were left at a 1980's cinema with a 15 minutes 360 degree movie that was partially possible to view and didn't really tell anything about the warriors. The main exhibition was then accessible through a combined souvenir and cafe area where everything seemed to have had a 50% price increase.

The main exhibition is of course the actual pits where the warriors, horses, carriages were found. Impressive to some extent but there is no background information to be found so you can admire the re-modelled warriors and the 1980's style aircraft hangar covering their site. Very few signs to tell you anything about the context, construction or anything else that could be of interest if you are not an expert in the Terracotta Army. When you leave them you have this feeling of having seen the Little Mermaid.

The only consolation was a small exhibition that was a bit newer than the rest which included some of the background information on how the produced the many warriors and so on. But it was still too little compared to the importance and significance of the find as a whole. We were however not let down when it came to the possibility to buy souvenirs at "souvenir street" since it went on for about a kilometer or so.

Back at the truck at 1 and then spending almost 2 hours getting back to the hotel. We relaxed in the afternoon and went out for some local food. Not the most impressive day on the trip - more like a tick-in-the-box.
