Bingling Si caves – Caves of the Thousands Buddhas

Short drive to a lake where we got on a speed boat for half an hour to get to the Bingling Si Caves - Caves of the Thousands Buddhas - which is placed in an amazing setting. Rocks with small caves and holes everywhere.

There are caves both on ground floor and higher up on the rock sides. We had to stay on the ground floor and we couldn't go into any of the caves but you could see different Buddhas and murrals on the walls and ceilings. Some of the caves were just 30x30 cm or a couple of m2. There're 694 statues and 82 clay sculptures - so not exactly 1000 buddhas - and a 27 meter high Buddha overlooking the area.

After the caves we walked to a Tibetan temple where we were showed around by a monk. The walk was incredible beautiful and here you had the feeling of being in the nature and not just looking at it like at the Rainbow Mountains.

After the speedboat ride back we drove for 3-4 hours to get to the Tibetan town Xiahe. A mountain valley town in 3000 metres. Half of the group went out for dinner together at a Tibetan restaurant. Some of us tried yak meat, which was good in the curry and hot pot Mikkel and I got and in their so called pizza which was more like hasbrowns but not in the burger which Cameron tried. He has been eager to get a burger for a couple of days but he probably has to wait to Xian or Beijing to get  decent western style burger.
