We were picked up this morning just after pancakes, bananas and coffee at the hostel. Nice breakfast - at least for a few days.
The drive to the base of the Volcano was only 20 minutes. Then we got dropped off and a 4WD was waiting for us. Going up the road towards the peak of the volcano was pretty interesting, the road getting steeper and steeper, the Toyota struggling a bit as we approached the sections where the incline exceeded 20%, and 25%. It felt like driving straight up a steep roller coaster and we really had to hold on to our seats in order to not slide to the back of the car. But we kept driving up the road until we made it to the top after 15 minutes.
Our guide - Vladimir - took us to the small visitors centre and explained us the history of the volcano and its surroundings. From there we did a one hour guided walk around the crater, a few places with great views of the areas below the volcano and the cloud forest.
The weather was unusually clear with no clouds this morning so we had a fantastic view overlooking Granada town, the Islestas islands in the lake, and in the horizon we could even spot some of the other peaks of volcanoes in Nicaragua. On top of that, we had a great guide who really knew the place, its geology, history and basically everything we asked him about Granada or Nicaragua.
We headed down the mountain in the 4WD, this time also holding on tour our seats and now being able to appreciate just how steep the road really was. We persuaded Vladimir to make a short stop at the visitors centre at the coffee plantation and bought a few bags of coffee and persuaded him to extent the stop a bit so we also had an opportunity to get a cup of coffee. Where else to have great coffee than at the "factory".
Coming back to Granada we were dropped off at the hostel, had local lunch at a small cafe nearby and took a walk around town picking up some cigars. Mikkel and Frederik then headed home to do what is most natural - smoke cigars and drink rum. The rest of us went city sightseeing - more specifically to the local market to have a look at all the foods, spices, fruits and veggies you can buy there.
Back at the hostel, Mikkel and Frederik had done the obvious of emptying the bottles of rum, a lot of beers and smoking their cigars which meant they were great entertainment at the dinner. They ended up having more beers with the owner of the restaurant when the rest of us had left to go back to the hostel.
Tomorrow is also an early morning pick up - at 8 AM, going to Managua to fly out to Big Corn Island.
