Huacachina - another lazy day with sandboarding.

Yes, we are in fact good at this. Not doing too much and feeling a bit lazy. Huacachina is the size of a parking lot. Surrounded by high dunes - like really high - you feel a bit like being in your own little world, ignoring that busy Ica is just down the road. The place has a small, green laguna in the middle which is surrounded by a pedestrian area, which again are surrounded by bars and restaurants and small shops. There is an extra layer of one road and hotels and then the dunes. The size of an American parking lot. Easy to walk around and in 20 minutes you have seen the whole town. Which for us meant more time to be lazy. Being at sea level also meant one very important thing for Malene. The temperature was now up in the high 20's so more time for t-shirts and shorts.

Our stay at the Bananas hostel included beach buggy ride to the dunes and sandboarding. Malene asked for the 3 PM departure but in the afternoon they told us it had been postponed to 5 PM. Great since it would mean that we would be in the dunes for sunset. We were picked up by a giant beach buggy, all 10 of us, taken through town and more or less straight up the sand dunes. And up there is a world of sand. The place is gigantic. Our driver took us up and down the dunes before he dropped us off at a ridge and did a short instruction about sandboarding. Then we sandboarded down the dunes. Three times, each time a bit steeper and longer than the previous.

Who knew that the combination of a worn out snowboard and sand could be this much fun. We saw the sun set over the dunes as we headed back to the laguna. A bit of so-so food for dinner, Huacachina not being the best place for food in Peru, we guess. Early to bed, since we have an early morning departure for Islas Ballestas. 6:30 AM - not really done with the early mornings.
