Shwedagon pagoda visit and high tea at Strand Hotel in Yangon

A combination of late evening and free beer spoiled our plans this morning. Instead of an early morning visit to the Shwedagon pagoda we slept in, had late breakfast and decided to skip the three hour train ride around Yangon that was also on the plan for today. Instead we headed out later in the morning to find a place to print our documents. The place recommended by the hotel clearly didn't exist so we had to ask our way ahead and found a small print shop and 2000 Kyat later we had a lot of paper ready. It was quite close to the Shwedagon pagoda so we walked down the road and found a sign to the pagoda taking us on a walk through the back alleys and a monastery before we were at one of the entrances to the Pagoda compound.

By then it was 2 PM and scorching hot. We had to leave our footwear at the entrance and walking on the white tiles around the pagoda was really hot and painful for the feet so we tried our best to walk around in the areas with a bit of shade. Not easy on this time of the day. Some of the floor tiles are coloured and it must be possible to simply fry an egg on them. Even the locals danced over them when they walked around.

Shwedagon pagoda is really impressive with so many different temples and the Shwedagon in the middle of the area. It was busy today and we later learned it was due to an "feed-the-monk"-event. Most visitors looked a bit exhausted in the afternoon heat and we also hurried back to the hotel for a quick shower and some nice clothes before taking a taxi to Strand Hotel for our 4 PM high tea appointment.

Feeling a bit colonial as we sat there and had tea served in silver tea pots and a big selection of scones, cakes and everything else that goes with a real high tea. So we spent the better part of two hours sitting there and enjoying the comfort of Strand Hotel.

We walked back through town towards our hotel and caught a taxi halfway, made it back and decided to stay in for the evening. No need to go out for dinner or anything else.
