A guy on a scooter picked us up from the motel in the morning. Malene first and then he returned for Mikkel 5 minutes later. Once at the boat we set off, happy to find out that we had our own boat. And our own boat man.
We spent the next 15 minutes going down the big canal leading to the lake. Once there we headed straight for the guys fishing from the back of their canoes. After 2 minutes we were asked for money and the whole mood changed into "not one of those tours". Our boat man continued towards the next village and the morning market. It turned out to be the same place that we visited yesterday for lunch but the market was in the other end of the village and turned out to be really good in the sense that this was the local market. Not too many tourists this early in the morning and apart from taking a lot of photos and smelling the food and spices we also had a chance to sit down and eat some local pan cakes. Made to order.
We spent almost an hour walking around, then back to the boat and further south on the lake. The rest of the morning was spent visiting workshop after workshop looking at silk weaving, silver smiths, the local black smith and a few other places that is not really on the top of our list of activities. Especially not when the balance between the workshop and the sales room is roughly 50/50. So it turned out to be a busy morning for our boatman - with some very short stops
We had one last stop at the lake this morning at a big temple - the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda where there is five golden images of the Buddha. The thing here is to go and apply leafs of gold to them and after centuries of this practice the Buddha images looks more like big lumps of gold.
Later we headed up a river towards the temple of Shwe Inn Thein. We had lunch at the river before walking around. The main attraction is an almost two kilometre long covered walkway to the temple which doubles as a two kilometre long covered souvenir sales stand. What was much more interesting to us was the old temples and stupas around the walkway that had been left to nature. This was really impressive compared to Bagan and how relatively well maintained the temples were there.
Back at the boat we had two stop left of the list - the floating gardens and a monastery. The floating gardens were more of a "sail by visit" but they were big and impressive and just the though of all the human labour that has gone into them is stunning.
The monastery was also nice with a big collection of different golden Bhuddas inside the main temple. Then it was time to head back towards town, we were dropped off and walked around town, trying to find the supermarket to stock up on some necessities. Then off to the French cafe for a nice ice coffee and back to our room to relax after a full day on the lake and lots and lots of sunshine.
Late in the evening we headed out for some dinner - a bit too tired to really want food but on the other hand we needed something after a long day.
