Daytrip to Las Peñitas beach

Today was our last day with Matilde since she is leaving for Denmark tomorrow morning so we decided to go for a early morning departure to the beach. Not as in early-early but after having a bit of friut for breakfast we headed out. Las Penitas Beach is really close to Leon and we decided to take the local bus there. First we caught the collectivo to get to the other side of town, and then the chicken bus waited for us. The drive to the far end of the beach took around 20 minutes and we were dropped of at the end of the road. Not much happening there at 10 AM - like in nothing. We went to one of the local restaurants for nica breakfast and watched the local fishermen trying their luck getting their boat past the big waves as the tide came in.

Fully loaded with rice, eggs and beans we headed out to the beach and walked along it for the next 1½ hours, watching the impressive waves crash on the shore. The sun was baking down and it was really hot even this early in the morning but we just enjoyed it and having the place more or less to ourselves was a pleasure. We passed many bigger and smaller places along the way that looked closed but eventually we came across a place that had a few empty hammocks and some shade, so we decided to hang out there for the rest of the afternoon. It turned out to be the right choice. We had some drinks, a swim in the ocean, relaxed in the shade, ordered lunch and just chilled out the best we could.

At 5 PM we ordered some sunset drinks to accompany our last sunset in the Pacific ocean for this trip. Malene and Mikkel are leaving for Esteli when Matilde heads for the airport tomorrow morning so today was our last sunset. It was beautiful. The last bus leaves Las Penitas at 6:30 PM so we were ready at the roadside a bit earlier not wanting to miss the last bus in case it was running on "local time". We were picked up and enjoyed the ride home which was with loud local music playing. For dinner we went out to a local Cuban restaurant and had great food and great drinks. Were going to miss Matilde, she's been great travelling with.
