Day trip to Tofino

Ever since we arrived in Canada - and actually even before arriving - we've had so many recommendations about going to Tofino. Apparently the place to go for reasons like "relax, chill and enjoy the atmosphere". Sound just like us.

The drive there was a bit long, the roads getting narrow and twisted as we hit the mountains. As a passenger on the other hand it was nice to enjoy the spectacular views. The weather hadn't really improved to the extent that the sun was up and shining but we kept our fingers crossed.

We finally made it to the coast and decided to head to Uclulet instead to check it out. We had a short stop at the Amphitrite lighthouse enjoying the pacific ocean, going a bit further up the coast and walking among the giant trees right on the beach.

Then we headed for Tofino and some much needed lunch. It was nice out there, the weather still a bit cold and windy but beautiful views also from the restaurant where we had lunch. We did walk a bit around town, checked out the hostel where Malene and Mikkel are coming back in some days and then we went for coffee and cake at the bakery.

On the way back to Nanaimo we stopped at Long beach and had a swim in the ocean. By then the sun had come out and the weather was again like summer. The ocean though was a bit cold.

Malene did the driving, Steen being in the front seat and Mikkel taking a nap in the back seat - when suddenly Steen spotted the bear. There it was. Emergency brake, U-turn and we saw a nice little black bear at the side of the road. It didn't like us, so it left and disappeared into the woods. Steen wanted to go out of the car to get a picture. We screamed "NO" and drove off. BUT this meant that Steen got to see his bear on the last drive in Canada. Tomorrow he's leaving for Europe and home.

We still had food and wine from last night so once more - nice tapas for dinner. Back packing is so tough.

Not the bear - but on the same road where we saw it
