Today was time to explore the surroundings of San Pedro. We rented bikes for 30 BS pr. bike and drove into the desert. The entry to the area is some 15 kilometers outside San Pedro town and already on the first hill it was easy to feel the lack of oxygen in the air. Being above 2000 meters does impact your physical performance.
After paying the entry fee to the
Valle de la Luna we drove on the dirt road slowly realising just why the place is named after the moon - because being there only the three of us felt like being on the moon. No plants, trees or animals around us, just desert, dunes, hills and valleys
We rode the bikes a few kilometres at the time, stopping at the sights which included the canyon and caves, the dunes and the salt plains at the end of the park. Climbing the dunes gave us an impressive view of the surrounding areas which seemed to be - empty and desolate.
On the way back to town we had a short stop for a cold drink, then we headed back to town, handed in the bikes to the rental shop and found a nice courtyard for a beer, a bit of food and some pisco's. Tomorrows going to be busy as well with a full day trip going out to find some flamingos.
And - we've been on the
road for six months straight today. It feels like a long time, a lot of impressions and great travel experiences. More of that to come - fingers crossed.
