We decided to take it easy this morning. Instead of going to the spa pools in town we had late breakfast and then we managed to Skype with Matilde and talk a bit about travel plans for New Years and for Nicaragua in general. Done with Skyping we packed our stuff and headed out in town. Mikkel remembered a place we biked by yesterday - a place that roasted coffee and sold chocolate. Perfect combination for having a little morning treat. Then we headed to the cathedral and looked a bit around and finally the market for our last lunch at the nice ladies.
At 3 PM we left Banos on one of the many buses heading for Quito. We had a good chance to get one more look at the Volcano and the massive plume of smoke and ash coming from the top of it. Then we spent the next 3½ hours heading for the main bus terminal in Quito. Conveniently located at the opposite end of the town than our hostel.
Leaving for Galapagos tomorrow we're staying at a hostel close to the airport which is in the middle of nowhere. Far from the city centre. We realised that we had the option to go for at USD 25 taxi or try our luck with the local bus for USD 2. We chose the latter and even though there was no help to get from the officials on the bus station we managed to find the bus and spend another 1½ hours going through the many neighbourhoods of Quito in darkness but still getting an impression of just how big the city is. We arrived at the airport, had the nicest guy call the hostel and 30 minutes later they picked us up. Unfortunately they forgot to tell us that they also expected other guests so we were left driving around the parking lot for almost 45 minutes before going to the hostel. When we finally got there we received a mail from Avianca that our 2 PM flight had been rescheduled to 7 AM. A bit of panic, a quick sandwich for dinner and then head to bed to get a few hours of sleep. But we are heading to Galapagos tomorrow. Yes !
