We had a ticket for the 9 AM bus to Huaraz this morning. Cruz del sur. Today being Saturday the traffic seemed a bit more relaxed than the other days and the taxi to the bus terminal only took 7 minutes or so. Not 35 like the other evening. The bus departed on time and then it took us more than an hour to get to the other end of Lima - to the Northern bus station - and another hour of dense traffic to get out of Lima. Another day of scenic driving later and our bus arrived at the tiny bus station in Huaraz just after dark. We had our luggage and fought our way through the crowd of taxi drivers all eager to take us somewhere. We asked them to take a break and they almost let us find the address for the hostel. It was a bit out of town which didn't really bother us. First impression of Huaraz seemed a little deserted and rural. Not the prettiest place in the mountains.
Our hostel owner - Gilf - welcomed us, explained all the details about the place and checked that our room was indeed clean before handing us the key. We then asked about going on the trip to Laguna 69 tomorrow and where to get dinner tonight. Dinner was the easy part - there was one place in the neighbourhood - La Rustica on the other side of the street. The trip to Laguna 69 was also no problem. Just be ready at 5 AM tomorrow for breakfast and departure at 5:30 AM. Eventhough we've had a long bus drive today we still decided to go for the hike tomorrow. We headed for dinner and realised that La Rustica had one item on the menu - The Peruvian national dish of roasted chicken with fries and salad. So many interesting veggies in this country and fries is still the preferred side order.
Back to the hostel. Got to get ready for the hike tomorrow.
