OK. Relaxing is not our strong side. At least not on this trip. So while walking about town the last couple of days we popped into a couple of tour companies to ask for things like hikes or bike trips. Our preferred trip turned out to be a drive out of town to a hill top. From the top there is a couple of hikes including one to petrified dinosaur footprints. A full day trip - we're in.
Meet at the office down town for a morning pick up and then cramp 6 persons plus driver and guide into a medium sized 4x4. Then we left Sucre and got at chance to see the suburbs on the other side of town. Not looking so flashy and clean as the city centre.
We drove for about 45 minutes ending on top of a small gravel road, got our day packs ready with food and drinks and started walking down "the inca trail". At least the local version of it. Being a small group and our guide meant it was nice to just stroll down and enjoy the scenery. The hike down took about two hours and then our 4x4 waited for us, ready to take us some 45 minutes up the road to another ridge.
There we had lunch, sheltering from the wind and the strong sun behind a small house. We walked for about 30 minutes through the fields before we came to the main attraction of the trip - petrified dinosaur footprints. We - the six of us were the only ones visiting this afternoon. We hung out for a while, had an explanation about how the footprints were formed and the petrification process before walking back to the car.
Then it was a short drive to the next ridge, stopping and overlooking the remains of the volcano crater at Maragua. Last stop today was at a local village where we were subjected to our favorite activity - handicraft at a local lady's house. Weaving wasn't really going to excite us today. Heading home we had a short stop for one final photo shot overlooking the landscape and the valley in the afternoon sunshine. Being able to see Sucre in the horizon it was hard to believe that the return trip would take an hour and a half but it was narrow gravel roads most of the way.
Dropped of where we started we headed down to the market and bought fruit, veggies and of course roasted chicken for dinner. Then back to the hostel to relax. Another great hike.
