Galapagos Cruise day #2 - Isabela Island, rough seas and saying hello to land turtles

The 8 hour sailing last night were very rough and very noisy. Our cabins are below deck and when the engine is running it makes a lot of noise. Add to that a boat that is swaying so much from side to side that Mikkel had to jam his leg against the ceiling not to fall out of the top bunk bed and you have the recipe for a bad nights sleep. Malene is usually not that good with rough seas but she made it during the night without having to go and puke - a lot of the other participants looked like they had had no sleep at all.

But we had to stick to our agenda, the boat was anchored off the coast this morning at a quiet location, the breakfast was served at 7 AM and everybody was in a good mood.  Those that had been on the deck early had seen countless numbers of blue footed boobies feeding on a school of fish that was moving around the bay. Bird after bird dropping out of the sky for some breakfast.

We left in the Zodiac at 8 AM, short ride to the shore and then walked around the lava island looking at more iguanas, sea lions and birds for about 30 minutes. The reason for being on this particular rock was also to get a chance to experience a certain type of lava flow - Aa lava flows. Pronounced Ahhh-Ahhh. Kind of rough to look at and walk on. We spent about 30 minutes on the island, Then headed back to the boat and a bit later in the morning we went on shore on the main island of Isabela, had a minibus driving us the short distance to the land turtle breeding centre. Our first meeting with these big turtles really impressed us.

First of all the centre has turtles in all sizes from new born to giant. And a good explanation of turtle reproduction and threats to the turtle population. We were there at 10 in the morning which happened to be feeding time and even though they are quite slow in terms of moving around they are fairly steady when it comes to chewing green stuff when it's served to them.

Done with the turtles we walked back to town, boarded the Zodiac - after paying USD 5 per person in departure tax - and had lunch on the ship. The weather then went to the worse, the wind picked up and so did the waves and we had the sky covered in clouds. Nevertheless we went for snorkelling in Concha de Perla which was a small bay just behind the pier. On normal days it's a dry landing, but the spring tide was so high that the board walk flooded. We got to the bay and realised that the combination of spring tide and high waves was making snorkelling a less enjoyable. Rough waters and very limited visibility.

The rest of the afternoon was spent in the courtyard of a hotel on the beach looking at the showers coming and going. A few people including Malene tried their luck walking to town and got caught in a huge rain shower. Back to the boat and then wait for briefing and dinner. Big waves and lots of wind is also going to make the sailing trip tonight rough.
