Spending our last full day in Hanoi we decided to book one of the street food tours. Some of the guys we met on the Halong bay cruise were recommending a local guy so we called him and agreed on him picking us up at the hotel at 5 PM. Plenty of time in the morning to do some sightseeing and shopping.
First stop in the morning Hoa Lo prison - or the "Hanoi Hilton" which was a full hour of medieval prison horror except the prison operated until a few decades ago. The shopping afterwards was a bit more fun and then we walked to the French Quarter, carefully looking at the sky, hoping it would stay dry until we made it to a cafe for our morning coffee.
We just made it to the cafe at the Sofitel Legend Metropole hotel and had coffee served - then the rain came, as in torrential rain. So we sat there and enjoyed the relatively dry spot we had, the rain pouring down and some insanely expensive coffee and sweets. Worth every Dong.
When the rain finally stopped we walked a bit further, had a small lunch at cafe de Paris and went home to the hotel, relaxing and Skyping for about an hour before "Kevin" picked us up and spent the next 5 hours walking us around Hanoi taking us to 10 different places serving everything from pancakes to sticky jelly desserts through bbq'ed dog meat and weird omelette with sea worms. And a whole lot of other tasty and interesting food. We were happy we had only had a small lunch because this was a tour de force in food - and then just a little more food. And Kevin doing an excellent job taking us around and explaining about the food and about Vietnam in general. Highly recommendable.
We headed back to the hotel and had a few last beers before going to bed. Last night in Vietnam, last night in Hanoi - and also last night on our trip.
