On the road and the sea to Koh Yao Yai (Koh Lanta to Koh Yao Yai)

We woke up at 6 AM, had all our stuff ready at 7 AM and were picked up at 7:30 as promised. We then spent the next hour or so going to a few other places to pick up more customers before heading for the ferries back to the main land. There we headed to Krabi and - it turned out - a change of transport. We left the minibus for an open van and had our back packs loaded on the roof.

Just as we left for the drive towards the ferry it started to rain. Fingers crossed that our back packs wouldn't be totally soaked once we got to the ferry. It was only a small shower this morning so we arrived with dry back packs at the ferry place and were guided to the right "ferry" - it is only big speed boats, the one today with room for 40 persons.

It was the usual disorganised departure - as always. The boat was partially full when we left the pier, only to do a 180 degree turn and move maybe 30 metres, dock next to a bigger ferry, wait for more passengers and the finally leave for our one hour trip to Koh Yao Yai.

Once at the pier at Koh Yao Yai the taxi driver asked where we were going and when we told him we were quoted a price for 600 Bath which seemed a little steep given that we had just spent the better part of four hours going more than 100 kilometres for 1000 Bath and now he wanted 300 Bath per person for a 20 minute ride.

He managed to persuade another couple to join us in his taxi and we split the bill. After around 20 minutes we were dropped off in front of our new "resort" - Heimat Gardens - a small place. A really nice room it turned out - thanks to Katrine and Jeppes concierge service.

Just when we were about to head down towards the beach and their resort we saw them heading up the driveway to our place. Nice to meet again after a few days apart. They could tell us what we already knew - Koh Yao Yai is near the opposite of Koh Lanta. Almost no people, no busy streets, almost no traffic and basically just a nice little village and a nice beach where we are staying. A few big resorts full of Chinese but they are very quiet compared to places in Koh Lanta. Perfect.

We headed down to the beach since there is only some places serving alcohol on this very Muslim island. Jeppe and Katrines place did serve beer so while the sun was setting, we shared stories about the previous days and some of our travel stories from earlier and had cold beer and good food for dinner while enjoying the beach. Definitely a good change from Koh Lanta though we also liked it there. More beach time tomorrow.

Ready to leave with mini bus

And then by open van

Off loading at the ferry

Chicken for dinner - maybe?
