Full day trip to the mountain lakes and the salt flats

Today was an early morning. Pick up at the hostel and then we headed out in the desert for a one hour drive. Dead straight road, flat terrain to the right, mountains to the left.

First stop in the tiny village Socaire to get used to the altitude and to take a look at the church. Then we headed a bit off road and had the breakfast stop at Laguna Miscanti - a lake at around 4000 meters altitude. Sunshine, cold weather and no wind provided a perfect spot for having breakfast with the best possible view. Breakfast as in a cup of tea and some cookies. We walked the shore of the lake, drove a bit further to the Miñiques Lake.

Then we headed to the salt lakes - or the red rocks - the area formally known as Las Piedras Rojas - the red rocks. We walked on the dried up salt at the shore of the lake scouting for Flamingos. There were a couple in the distance doing what flamingos are best at - eating. They spend the majority of their active time, some 16 hours a day, eating.

We headed back to town of Sociare for lunch and then towards Laguna Chaxa to see more flamingos. Chaxa is a real salt flat as long as you can see in all directions. It is partially flooded and that's where the flamingos are - eating. And eating some more.

Last stop on the way back was short - in Toconao. Nice town with a square and a church. Then we headed back to the hostel for some home made BBQ. Great day on the Lagunas Altiplanicas.
