Visiting the temples of Bagan - on e-bike

Yesterday upon arrival, we asked at the reception for e-bike rental and the nice guy wanted to know how early in the morning we wanted our bike. 11 or 12 we said. He was a bit confused but we wanted to have a late morning. Which we did. So many early mornings in Myanmar already so today was our "stay in the room until 12"-day. Then we headed down the road, handed in laundry, rented an e-bike (the preferred mean of transportation here) and used the rest of the afternoon visiting temples - big and small.

Only having a small tourist map with an indication of the biggest temples and Google maps as a back up turned out to be a great way to navigate and find the places we wanted to see. So we went from temple to temple, stopped at the bigger ones and walked around while some of the smaller ones were only for photo stops. Just one pit stop at home to pick up a bit more clothing - they are not too happy with shorts in the temples.

There is a tremendous number of temples to look at and to visit. One day might be enough for the major temples if you spend a full day but two days seems more doable. This is also our plan. Today on day one we'll do some of the temples and see if we can find a nice temple top for the sunset. All around old Bagan.

We managed to visit Kyan Sithar Umin, Upali Thein and the Bu Paya stupa in old Bagan among many of the temples we stopped at this afternoon. Our first temple top was near Htilominio where we found access to the top of the roof on a smaller temple nearby. Later at Gawdapalin a local girl also took us to a smaller temple and we had one last sunset look at the various temple tops surrounding us. It is really spectacular to know that this place has been like this since around 1200 AD.

We headed back to our hotel, dropped off the e-bike on the way and agreed to pick up another e-bike tomorrow at 5.30 AM for our sunrise tour of the temples.

Dinner at another local restaurant where Malene got a really good burger. Sometimes recognisable food is just the thing of the day. We'll be back on Myanmar food soon, anyway.
